Daria was such an unexpected masterclass in terms of female characterization, the teenage psyche and everything surrounding this period of uncertainty that everyone goes through at some point. Contrary to how I always viewed Daria from my passing interest in the show growing up (cold, mean-spirited or just ”edgy”), I was pleasantly surprised to find out she's such a complex, relatable and all-around loveable protagonist. I can only praise the writers of this show for how they handled multiple complex female character without ever feeling like they're being mocked or misinterpreted, and given the period during which the show was created, it's even more applaudable and worthy of appreciation what the showrunners managed to accomplish. In a time when female characters were more-or-less just plot devices to further a male protagonist's adventure, it is so heartwarming to know Daria as a show and character existed. With no extreme sex-appeal or any other misogynistic trope to draw attention towards the show, Daria managed to capture the attention and hearts of many by just being smart, relatable, at times snarky and painfully 16, but just heartwarmingly real nonetheless. This show is a love-letter to every ”weird” kid out there that couldn't fit in properly, while also accurately representing the high school experience of popular, normal, alternative students or even students from other minorities, which I'm glad they included. I also appreciated the depiction of authority figures in a student's life and how important it is that they are responsible, understanding and patient. This focus on interpersonal relationships on multiple levels made the show feel authentic and immersive, as if I personally knew the characters themselves. With incredible music, unique animation and just oozing of style, I would recommend Daria to anyone and I will undoubtedly rewatch it several times. 10/10 all around.
